I am From
I am from hand-sewn clothes
from tide and bounce sheets.
I am from the beaches of Santa Monica
(Ocean breezes and warm sun.)
I am from the hills of Agoura, the Lady Face Mountain and T.O. Blvd.
The scorching summer heat that reminds of being young and having fun.
I'm from Yum Yum donuts and matzo ball soup from the deli,
from bagel lunches and chargeritos.
I'm from the hard-working
and the Sunday family dinner night,
from “get to work” and the early curfew.
I am from the Varela family who loves to dance.
Who share their time with music and fun.
From a cherished coffee-bean necklace to empanadas to die for.
I am from the Campos Crew in Argentina,
Who kiss you more than you imagine.
Who love you with all their hearts.
Who celebrate you being you
I am from 3 girls in a bunk bed
To sharing a room with my wacky little sis
To being able to have my own space
From whispering laughs and big wheel rides.
From shampoo bottle fights to buying our own clothes.
From a little brother who talked in his sleep and a house full of girly things.
I am from a butcher, a seamstress and a truckdriver.
from a little girl picking mangos off the trees in Cali (Colombia).
I am from family ties that can’t be broken,
From forgiveness and tears.
I am from “Give it to God” and
Prayers as a family to manna from heaven.
a girl driving to college all alone
and a boy who loved her along the way.
I am from two anniversaries and babies who have stolen my heart.
I am from pictures kept in boxes and a wedding gown in the attic.
From the memories that burn in my heart and the ones I am creating today.
I'm from Drive Thru Starbucks and Jalapenos,
non-fat latte and bean and cheese burrito.
From the country my parents traveled from
to the country I love today.
I am from Colombia, Argentina and the USA.
I am from here and now and from yesterday. I am here and I am blessed.
