The life of my 4 year old, N, has been mostly great. However, the poor child has had to endure some pretty crazy stuff since he was in the womb. When I was 20 weeks pregnant with him I was told that my baby (I didn't know if he was a boy or girl) had enlarged kidneys. There was a possibility that the "baby" would have to be delivered early - so while on bed rest, I had to go into a perinatologist to get ultrasound checks on our baby's kidney's every 10 days. I still never found out that he was a boy until the day he arrived 3 days late.
When he finally did arrive, he was born with both big toes having ingrown toenails - yes, it is rare, but can happen. His big toes had to have the nails removed twice.
Then, his left eye had a clogged tear duct until he was almost 12 months old. We went through several bottles of eye drops to try to keep his eye from developing into an infection. We scheduled his surgery to have his tear duct probed, and his eye cleared up the next day - God is so good!
N had constant ear infections which eventually stopped when we decided to put tubes in his ears - not an infection since - Thank you, Lord!
Through N's first year of life, he also had several tests done to monitor his hydronephrosis in his kidneys. The worst of them all was a renal scan with lasix. The poor little guy was 11 months old when he first had it done and it was not only torture for him, but for me! Imagine your 11 month old strapped down, catheter inserted, iv put in and he or she must sit still for 60 minutes while this very large machine photographs the organ every minute for the entirety of the hour. Every year we have an ultrasound to assess the size of his kidney's and compare them to the year before in the hopes that they are less than the prior years size. If they are larger than the year before, further tests are then ordered.
Well today we had to do it again, renal scan with lasix. It was a very emotionally draining day and N cried so much (as did mom - good thing dad was there telling me to stop, that I needed to be strong for my son). We brought him some rewards for being strong and staying still while they poked the poor little guy! Who knew Spiderman and the Green Goblin had such power to make a 4 year old sit still while a catheter was being inserted or an IV put in! He was so brave - he didn't fight it all, just had lots of tears! We brought a small dvd player and he watched spiderman part of the time and the little einsteins the other half of the time. We will know on Tuesday what the results of today's renal scan are, but we are praying that his kidney function is okay and that this is the last time we have to torture our poor son.....I'd say he's endured enough at his young age!
And, I must say, THANK YOU to Sarah who watched our little princess today so that both mom and dad could be with N. My family lives to far to be able to come and help and my sister-in-law is pregnant and is on bedrest this week. Sarah pulled through and took Kate for the whole day - it is truly amazing how my friends are my family here in Orange County. I feel like you gals are the one's who are ALWAYS there for me and my kids when we need you...no questions asked, no complaints! You are all so awesome and I thank God for each of you! Thank you to all of you gals that offered to watch my kids - you girls are amazing - you have your own busy lives and yet you are always there for me! I love you all - you know who you are! xoxoxoxo
